2017 A "Milestone" Year Comes to a Close

For Scott Donald, President and CEO, Western Surety Company, 2017 was a year highlighted by three major milestones.

Firstly, Donald completed his 10th year as President of WSC, and in July, he celebrated his 30th year as a WSC employee. The Surety Association of Canada also celebrated its 25th anniversary and the silver year initiative relative to a new Ontario legislation to be enacted is perhaps the Association’s most important “win” in its 25 year history.

“After two years of virtually no claims, WSC did meet some claim challenges in Western Canada in 2017. While certainly not as significant as in previous years and just slightly over our budgeted claim expectations, when any calendar year ends with a new claim, it, by human nature, makes one look to the following year. Fortunately, we will very likely surpass the $26,000,000 mark in premium for the first time and in general terms, will have another solid year of overall results.”

In regards to 2018, Donald believes the company is set with the staff and resources in all three offices to grow successfully in the coming years. WSC was fortunate enough to hire three high potential employees in 2017 and management expects them to have a very positive impact in 2018.

Donald states, “Although our underwriting philosophies will continue to be predictable and consistent from a broker’s perspective, our senior management and directors undertook a two day planning retreat in November 2017. Upon implementation of the recommendations, WSC will provide enhanced service, efficiencies, and communications.”

“Our E-Services continue to receive many compliments from the broker force. My only recommendation to those few brokers that have not been on the system would be to give it a chance in 2018. I can practically guarantee that new users will not be disappointed!”

With many variables in play, the staff of WSC look forward to 2018 with cautious optimism. Employees will continue to work under the auspices of the WSC vision, mission, and value statements culminating with a continuation of positive results, further “service excellence” to our broker force, and the strengthening of our solid corporate and personal relationships.

While the staff continue to promote the WSC slogan “It’s all about the people”, Donald indicates, “Despite a wealth of corporations involved in our industry, it is still the people behind the corporate name that make the difference.”

“On behalf of the entire Western Surety staff, have yourselves a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
