The Passing of a Trusted Friend, Colleague, and WSC Director

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mr. J. Paul Bourassa on October 11, 2023 after fighting a remarkably long and courageous battle with cancer. Paul was an integral part of Western Surety Company for 36 years serving as General Counsel for 34 years and Chief Compliance Officer for 10 years until his retirement at the conclusion of 2021. In 2022, Paul was proudly instated to Western Surety’s Board of Directors and continued to provide valuable executive direction for the company. Paul was also General Counsel for the Hill Companies from 1987 to 2012.

Paul was an extremely diligent and knowledgeable lawyer. He was renowned and respected in the industry for representing the company in prominent and precedent-setting case law for not only Western Surety, but the Canadian surety market as a whole. Western Surety is proud that many of Paul’s legal undertakings are still relied upon today and set a course for many important industry elements.

“Paul and I started within one month of each other way back in 1987 but our business relationship really began when I was named President of WSC in 2008 and our friendship blossomed shortly after commencing his sole dedication to WSC in 2012” said WSC President and CEO Scott Donald.

“He epitomized what our company stands for; professionalism, trust, respect and dedication along with many other attributes. He will be missed and our thoughts go out to his wife Elaine and a number of cherished family members.”

Paul’s contributions to various Saskatchewan charities are too numerous to name within this platform however his final request was for all of us to favourably consider volunteerism, mentorship or donations to charitable organizations.

In Paul’s memory, WSC will be making a donation to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
