Established in 2006, the Steward of Suretyship Award, as selected by the SAC Board of
Directors, recognizes the individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the surety
profession over a career or extended period of time. David is one of only 16 individuals who
have been awarded this industry distinction.
David started his surety career in 1972, after graduating from the University of Toronto. From
several surety underwriting positions in Toronto, his career path took him to the west coast
where he worked as a broker and then to Edmonton where he assumed an executive underwriting position. In September, 1998, David was named President and CEO of Western Surety Company.
Throughout his long surety career, David has always made time to give back to the industry.
He was a charter member of SAC’s Western/Prairies Regional Committee where he went on to
serve as its Chair. He was elected to SAC’s national Board of Directors in 2002 and he served as
Chairman in 2005.
In 2008, David stepped down as President of Western Surety Company. He remained CEO until
2011 when he became Western Surety’s first Chief Risk Officer, and continues to serve as a director on the board.
On behalf of all of us at Western Surety Company, we congratulate David on receiving this prestigious award and we express our gratitude for everything he has brought to our company and to the surety industry at large.
